Diana Janse, secretary of state of the Ministry for International Cooperation for Development and Foreign Trade, is visiting Moldova on January 16-17. The official move takes place in the context of Stockholm taking over the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union, but also against the background of the war in Ukraine.
“Continued support for Ukraine and Moldova is a major foreign policy objective and a priority for Sweden. We see that Moldova is directly affected by the Russian aggression against Ukraine and that Moldova has assumed a huge responsibility by receiving a very large number of refugees”, says Janse.
During the visit, the Swedish Secretary of State will meet with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Nicu Popescu, the Minister of Internal Affairs, Ana Revenco, the Minister of the Environment, Iordanca-Rodica Iordanov, as well as representatives of civil society, local authorities and international partners.

“Moldova’s future is in Europe and we congratulate the country for receiving the candidate status to become a member of the European Union. The road to accession is long and requires diligent work from all institutions. Sweden will remain with Moldova throughout this process”, points out the official from Stockholm.

Sweden is a long-term partner for Moldova, being also one of the biggest donors. Support is channeled as direct bilateral cooperation as well as support through EU development funds.
In 2022, Sweden provided 16 million euros for development cooperation and an additional 14 million euros for the response to the energy crisis and six million euros for the humanitarian response for refugees.
