Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu met with Giuseppe Grimaldi, the new Head of Operations of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in the Republic of Moldova, to discuss ongoing projects supported by the European institution. The talks focused on rehabilitating road infrastructure and strengthening the country’s energy security.
“The financial assistance and expertise provided by the EBRD are essential for modernizing infrastructure and increasing our economy’s competitiveness. We have a strong partnership and a shared vision. Together, through the Growth Plan for Moldova, we will bring our country closer to European standards,” said Prime Minister Munteanu, according to the government’s press release.
During the meeting, officials reviewed the main infrastructure projects currently underway with EBRD support, emphasizing the need to accelerate implementation and align them with national priorities.
In total, 67 projects are being implemented, covering key sectors such as road and rail modernization, energy interconnection, energy efficiency, natural gas supply security, and waste management improvements.
Among the flagship initiatives are:
- the rehabilitation and expansion of the M2 Chisinau Beltway,
- the modernization of the Chisinau–Leușeni road,
- the construction of the Vulcanesti–Chisinau power line, and
- the modernization of centralized heating systems in Balti and Chisinau.
The government also highlighted agriculture as a future priority.
“A key direction will be expanding access to financing for farmers — a complementary measure to irrigation modernization projects — to stimulate productivity and strengthen resilience in the agricultural sector,” the press release noted.
Giuseppe Grimaldi assumed his position as the EBRD Head of Operations in Moldova on October 1, 2025. Since beginning its work in the country in 1992, the EBRD has invested over €2.8 billion in 188 development projects.
