Anca Dragu Marks 34 Years of the NBM: “We Build a Transparent, European, and Resilient Banking System”

The National Bank of Moldova (NBM) marked its 34th anniversary on Tuesday, June 4 — a day that also honors the country’s banking professionals. On this occasion, the NBM Governor Anca Dragu conveyed a congratulatory message.

“If the economy is a country’s body, then the banking system is the heart that keeps it alive. For 34 years, the National Bank of Moldova has played that role — sometimes beating rapidly, sometimes under pressure, but always with the strength to keep going for the good of the country. Not all periods were easy. There were moments of imbalance, but true resilience lies in the ability to rebuild with wisdom and integrity,” Dragu stated.

She emphasized that today, the NBM stands as a modern, independent, transparent, and visionary institution, guiding Moldova toward a strong European economy.

“We play an active role in Moldova’s EU accession process — a project that, beyond reforms and convergence, guarantees peace, stability, and a shared future in the European family. Recent reforms include the introduction of the MIA instant payment system, Moldova’s accession to SEPA, robust efforts to combat illicit finance, and the digitalization of banking.

These reforms go beyond technical accomplishments — they signal a substantial transformation toward a healthier, more transparent, and European-aligned financial system,” she said.

Dragu highlighted the people behind this transformation: banking professionals who ensure stability, rethink financial tools, and build a safer, more accessible banking system.

“In all these 34 years, the NBM has had reliable partners: central banks that share our values — particularly the National Bank of Romania — as well as trusted international allies like the EU, the IMF, the World Bank, and others who supported us through dialogue, trust, and cooperation.”

She stressed that Moldova’s most significant partner remains the citizens.

“In recent years, more and more people have walked through our doors — visiting the NBM museum, joining public events, or attending financial education sessions. That shows a genuine desire to engage, learn, and understand the economic mechanisms that shape our lives.”

Dragu thanked all banking professionals for their dedication.

“Through your professionalism, courage, and competence, you bring greater trust. We have an ambitious agenda ahead — European integration, digital innovation, and building a financial system that supports sustainable economic growth and well-being for every citizen. We are ready to build it together, with courage and determination.”

“I thank you for making stability your mission and progress your unwavering direction. Together, you’ve given meaning and confidence to Moldova’s European journey. Happy anniversary, National Bank of Moldova!” she concluded.

The NBM holds the exclusive right to issue and withdraw banknotes and coins from circulation in Moldova. It also issues commemorative coins for legal tender and numismatic purposes. The bank launched its first numismatic issue in 1996 to mark the fifth anniversary of Moldova’s independence.
