Border security between the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine strengthened thanks to an EU-funded project implemented by IOM

The Moldovan and Ukrainian authorities have strengthened joint control and exchange of information on persons, vehicles, and goods crossing the border between the two states.

Three road checkpoints (Criva – Mamalyga, Otach – Mogilev-Podolsky and Palanca – Mayaki – Udobnoye) have installed video control mechanisms and automatic license plate recognition systems, which allow the exchange of customs information in real-time. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) made this possible through the “EU for Border Security” project.

Today, at the Palanca-Mayaci-Udobnoye common border crossing point, Oleg Mykolaychuk, deputy head of the State Customs Service of Ukraine, and Viorel Doaga, acting director of the Customs Service of the Republic of Moldova, signed technical specifications for data exchange, finalizing the implementation of achievements within the Integrated Border Management project funded by the European Union.

“The project modernized the central IT systems of the Customs Service of the Republic of Moldova and the State Customs Service of Ukraine. The modernizations improved business processes and facilitated mutual information exchange between Ukraine and Moldova, as well as future interaction with the customs information systems of the European Union,” said Viorel Doaga.

The project also supported the General Inspectorate of Border Police of Moldova and the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, which received modern equipment to patrol the Dniester River.

“EU support has facilitated trade and movement of people on the border between Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova while preventing and combating smuggling and other crimes. Ultimately, this has contributed to the security, stability, and sustainable development,” said Oleg Mykolaychuk.

The EU Border Security project ran from January 2020 to June 2024, with a total budget of €4,440,000. The European Union allocated 3,552,000 euros, and the rest of the amount was co-financed by the Customs Service of the Republic of Moldova, the State Customs Service of Ukraine, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, and the General Inspectorate of Border Police of the Republic of Moldova.
