Breaking News! Irrevocable Decision in Ilan Shor’s Case: The Fugitive Oligarch Remains Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison

The Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ) rejected the appeal filed by Ilan Shor’s lawyers on Friday, December 13, thereby upholding the Chisinau Court of Appeal’s decision from April 13, 2023, sentencing Shor to 15 years in prison, reports IPN.

“All key arguments presented by the defense, those that could have influenced the case outcome, were found to be either unfounded or procedurally inadmissible. Other arguments, including those concerning the inadmissibility of evidence, were clearly unfounded or sufficiently countered by the appellate court and do not require further detailed rebuttal in the decision,” the SCJ ruling states.

In June 2017, Ilan Shor was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for defrauding the state through deceit and abuse of trust. On April 13, 2023, the Chisinau Court of Appeal handed down a final sentence of 15 years in prison. The appellate court also barred Shor from holding positions in the banking system for five years and ordered the recovery of 5.2 billion lei from him.

Ilan Shor fled the Republic of Moldova before the sentencing was pronounced, and extradition efforts have received no response.
