President Maia Sandu has appointed Eugeniu Osmochescu as Moldova’s acting prime minister, the Presidential Administration announced.

Under Moldova’s legislation, if a resigning prime minister declines to continue exercising the duties of office until a new head of government is appointed, the president designates a member of the cabinet to serve as acting prime minister.

“The President of the Republic of Moldova has today signed the decree appointing Mr. Eugeniu Osmochescu, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization, as acting Prime Minister, effective from July 8, 2026,” the Presidency said in a statement.

Earlier, local media reported that former Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu had declined to remain in the interim role after announcing his resignation on July 3.

President Sandu is expected to hold consultations with parliamentary parties later this week to identify a candidate for the post of prime minister. The exact date of the consultations has not yet been officially announced.

Several names continue to circulate publicly as possible candidates for the position, including Education Minister Dan Perciun, Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, PAS lawmaker Andrian Balutel, and businessman Vasile Tofan. None has been officially nominated.
