Chisinau Mayor Ion Ceban has requested additional inspections after the municipality received multiple complaints that air conditioning systems in trolleybuses and buses are not functioning properly during the recent heatwave.

During an operational meeting with municipal services, the mayor stated that all public transport units purchased during the current and previous mandates are equipped with air conditioning systems and instructed officials to monitor the situation on a daily basis.

“We do not understand the reason, as staff are informed and all purchased units are equipped with air conditioning. We hope this is not intentional, and I have ordered an additional check,” Ceban said.

The mayor noted that out of more than 500 public transport units operating daily in Chisinau, around 80% are equipped with air conditioning. He added that trolleybuses and buses purchased before 2019 do not have such systems installed, and retrofitting them is not technically feasible.

Ceban instructed deputy mayors and the management of the Chisinau Electric Transport Authority to verify daily whether air conditioning systems are turned on in equipped vehicles and to intervene when irregularities are identified.

He also called on municipal employees to use public transport during the heatwave period in order to personally assess passenger conditions.
