Residents and visitors of the capital will be able to take part in free guided tours dedicated to Carol Schmidt, one of the most prominent mayors in Chisinau’s history, as the city marks 180 years since his birth.

The events are organised by the Chisinau City Hall and will take place on 25 and 27 June, offering participants a route through key locations linked to Schmidt’s life and work. The tours will highlight landmark buildings and urban spaces developed or transformed during his administration, showcasing the modernization of the city under his leadership.

Tours will be conducted in Romanian and Russian. Romanian-language tours will start at 18:00, while Russian-language tours will begin at 18:30. The meeting point is the National Philharmonic “Serghei Lunchevici,” located opposite Carol Schmidt’s former residence.

The commemorative programme also includes a flower-laying ceremony at Schmidt’s bust on 25 June at 09:30, as well as a conference on his life and legacy held in the Round Hall of the Chisinau City Hall.

Carol Schmidt was born on 25 June 1846 in Balti and served as mayor of Chisinau for 25 years, between 1877 and 1903. During his tenure, he oversaw major urban development projects, including the expansion of water supply systems, electrification, road paving, and the development of educational institutions.
