Authorities in the Republic of Moldova do not plan to respond to recent drone incidents with radical diplomatic measures, such as expelling the unaccredited ambassador of the Russian Federation or denouncing bilateral treaties. Mihai Popsoi clarified this position during the program “Rezoomat” on Realitatea TV.

According to the foreign minister, strengthening defense capabilities offers the most effective way to protect citizens.

“Only investment in the defense sector, including anti-air and anti-drone systems, can provide safety and guarantee that such threats will not harm citizens,” he said, emphasizing that other measures would have more psychological than practical effects.

His remarks follow a recent incident in which a drone fell onto the roof of a residential building in the Telecentru district of Chisinau. Authorities confirmed that the device carried no explosives and continue to investigate its origin.

At the same time, the government in Chisinau does not plan to withdraw from the Moldova–Russia Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation. Mihai Popsoi explained that this document underpins diplomatic relations between the two countries and that abandoning it would effectively suspend bilateral ties and risk escalating regional tensions.

Former presidents Vladimir Voronin and Vladimir Putin signed the treaty in 2001, and authorities extended it in 2011 for another ten years. The agreement outlines, among other provisions, Russia’s role as mediator and guarantor in resolving the Transnistrian conflict.
