Dan Barna: Moldova Is “Top of the Class” on EU Path, September Elections a Critical Test

MEP Dan Barna praised the Republic of Moldova as a leader in EU accession efforts, calling the country’s current situation “an extraordinary window of opportunity” amid ongoing geopolitical challenges. Speaking on Radio Moldova, Barna emphasized that the upcoming parliamentary elections on 28 September represent a crucial test for Moldova’s European trajectory.

“Moldova is top of the class in terms of EU enlargement and accession preparations,” Barna said. “We see clear efforts from President Maia Sandu and the government to keep Moldova on a European path. In this complicated geopolitical context shaped by the war in Ukraine, Europe’s doors are open. Moldova must seize this stellar moment and advance as far as possible.”

Barna stressed that no EU member state currently opposes Moldova’s accession. What remains, he noted, is to identify “the correct procedural mechanism” that fits the current political landscape. He highlighted that EU enlargement is no longer a bloc process and each country’s progress is assessed individually based on reforms and institutional readiness.

“Moldova is at the forefront of preparation, and this is recognized across Europe,” he said. “I am optimistic Moldova could be the first, or among the first two or three states, to join the EU in the next wave.”

Barna also underlined the importance of the upcoming elections. “The 28 September vote is a critical moment for Moldovan society. It will determine whether the country continues its European journey or shifts direction. Expectations are high. If voters choose a pro-Eastern government, things will change.”

He concluded with a call to civic responsibility: “Every vote matters. Your vote, along with your neighbor’s and colleague’s, will decide whether Moldova moves confidently toward Europe or remains lost in the Siberian fog.”

Citizens of the Republic of Moldova will vote at polling stations on 28 September to elect a new Parliament.
