Prime Minister Dorin Recean announced that Moldova is ready to manage any challenges arising from the Kremlin’s decision. The announcement followed Gazprom’s notification to Moldovagaz that it would cease natural gas deliveries starting 1 January 2025.
The prime minister emphasized that this decision again highlights the Kremlin’s intent to deprive residents in the Transnistrian region of electricity and heating during the winter.
“Russia uses energy as a political weapon, holding the people in the Transnistrian region—whom it controls through its illegally deployed army—hostage,” Recean stated.
“The government condemns these oppressive tactics and reiterates that it will not recognize any alleged debts invalidated by international audits,” he added.

Recean noted that Moldova has diversified its natural gas supply sources to reduce reliance on a single provider for the right bank of the Dniester.
“Our country is prepared to address any consequences of the Kremlin’s decision. We will continue securing natural gas from alternative sources and protecting vulnerable consumers. The government will carefully explore legal options, including international arbitration, to defend national interests and seek compensation for damages caused by the Kremlin’s decisions, which inflict economic losses and jeopardize the safety and security of Moldova’s citizens,” Recean explained.
Earlier today, Gazprom informed Moldovagaz that it would stop supplying natural gas from 1 January 2025 at 8:00, citing Moldovagaz’s “consistent failure to meet payment obligations” as the reason.
