Eight people have been detained after police raided five call centers on October 9 over suspected involvement in a cryptocurrency investment fraud scheme. According to the information available, the victims were allegedly based in the United States and Canada and were persuaded to transfer money through fake trading platforms.
The suspects allegedly posed as investment experts and promised people profits, providing false information about potential returns and risks. In this way, victims were persuaded to invest money in fraudulent schemes.
The investigation indicates that the operation was well organized, with each person assigned a specific role, ranging from recruiting employees and coordinating the call centers to managing money and documents belonging to the companies involved.
During the searches, police seized cash, phones, computers, bank cards and accounting documents. They also found jamming devices and a polygraph, which investigators believe was used to test recruited individuals.
According to preliminary police information, a single call center allegedly generated approximately $2 million per month through the suspected illegal activity.
Dozens of people were allegedly involved in the scheme, including citizens of Cameroon, India, Israel, Nigeria, Georgia and Ukraine. The individuals identified were checked with the assistance of officers from the General Inspectorate for Migration and the International Police Cooperation Directorate.
The eight detainees were placed in a pre-trial detention facility. Law enforcement officers are continuing the investigation to establish who else may have been involved and determine the losses suffered by the victims.
