EPC Supports Moldova’s European Integration, says Former Deputy Minister Groza

The European Political Community (EPC) does not replace but can contribute to the European integration of the Republic of Moldova, according to Iulian Groza, the Executive Director of the Institute for European Policies and Reforms (IPRE) and former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Moldova.

“The role of the European Union in shaping and supporting initiatives within the EPC is crucial. However, it is clear that the European Political Community is not an alternative to EU enlargement but rather a vehicle that can contribute to revitalizing the European project based on common values and interests,” mentioned the IPRE director.

According to the expert, the Community should also contribute to the transition of Moldova, Ukraine, and Georgia from the Eastern Partnership with the EU to the revised enlargement policy.

“EU accession is a long-term process. However, the Association Agreement with the EU and Moldova’s participation in the Southeast European formats alongside the Balkan countries since the early 2000s already provide us with a solid foundation in terms of bringing our country closer to the European Union through political association and economic integration,” explained Iulian Groza.

Thus, the European Political Community represents a platform to assist the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine, and Georgia on the path to accession, supporting democratic and economic reforms, as well as achieving intermediate stages of integration, such as joining the EU Single Market.

It is worth noting that 40 European officials have confirmed their presence at the European Political Community Summit, which will take place on June 1st in the Republic of Moldova.

Leaders gathered in Chisinau will discuss joint efforts for peace in the context of the war in Ukraine and related crises, defending democracy, strengthening energy security, and enhancing the resilience of European states. The summit serves as a platform to reaffirm the commitment to European values and cooperation, highlighting the importance of regional stability and progress towards European integration for Moldova and its neighboring countries.
