(EXCLUSIVE) NATO Reaffirms Respect for Moldova’s Neutrality Amid Kremlin Allegations

NATO fully respects Moldova’s constitutional neutrality, and its partnership with the country reflects the sovereign decisions of the Moldovan government, officials from the North Atlantic Alliance told Realitatea. The response comes after Russia’s intelligence services accused NATO of transforming Moldova into a military springboard against the Russian Federation.

“NATO is a defensive alliance and fully respects the neutrality of the Republic of Moldova. Partnerships with NATO are based solely on the requests of each country and reflect the sovereign decisions of partner nations. These collaborations benefit all parties and contribute to strengthening international security,” NATO officials stated.

Earlier, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized that member states are working to ensure Moldova’s ability to defend itself against hybrid threats from Russia, particularly in the context of the parliamentary elections scheduled for September 2025.

Last week, Russian and Belarusian diplomats published a joint report accusing the Moldovan authorities of human rights violations. The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service followed with a statement alleging that NATO seeks to use Moldova’s Marculesti airport for military purposes and turn Moldovan citizens into “cannon fodder.”

Despite these claims, NATO maintains that its partnerships are voluntary, transparent, and defensive, grounded in mutual interests and respect for national sovereignty.
