German Foreign Minister: ”The Future of the Republic of Moldova is at the Heart of Europe”

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock reiterated on Friday Germany’s commitment to supporting the Republic of Moldova in its process of joining the European Union. The country is preparing for the presidential elections and the referendum on EU accession, which will take place on Sunday, reports DPA

“The people of Moldova have the power to decide their future. I am confident that this future lies in the heart of Europe,” Baerbock stated in Berlin.

She emphasized that Sunday’s elections and referendum are crucial moments for this small country situated between Ukraine and Romania, as its citizens will decide on the inclusion of the EU accession objective in the Constitution.

Baerbock criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin, highlighting that “Putin’s Russia is also attacking elections in Europe using hybrid methods: targeted influence, cyberattacks, and disinformation spread by his army of bots on social media.”

Chisinau has countered these threats with the support of the Moldova Partnership Platform, launched by the German government along with its partners just 40 days after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the German foreign minister added.

“The country has freed itself from the grip of Russian gas blackmail,” the minister stated, praising the ongoing judicial and anti-corruption reforms.
