The Ranking Web of Universities (Webometrics) has published the global university rankings for January 2023. This ranking includes over 31,000 universities worldwide, including 25 institutions from the Republic of Moldova.
According to the Webometrics report, the University of Medicine and Pharmacy (USMF) holds the first position in the Republic of Moldova, followed by the Technical University of Moldova (UTM) in second place, and the Moldova State University (USM) in third place.

The indicators considered by the Webometrics ranking are as follows:
- 50% – Visibility – the total number of external links received by the university’s website from third-party sources.
- 10% – Transparency – the total number of citations received by the university’s scientific articles (more details can be found here).
- 40% – Excellence – the quality of scientific articles published in international journals with high impact, ranked among the top 10% most cited in a specific field.
The inclusion of the institutions’ web pages in the ranking was possible due to the implementation of the action plan for the computerization of the educational sphere in the Republic of Moldova. This plan includes connecting all university subdivisions to the Internet, international educational and scientific databases, as well as the development and maintenance of websites and information services.
Webometrics is a ranking created by the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group within the Spanish National Research Council since 2004. The ranking is based on publicly accessible web data, and the results are made public in January and July each year.
