Starting January 1, 2025, Romanian citizens can travel freely within the Schengen Area by road. On December 12, 2024, EU interior ministers decided to lift land border checks for Bulgaria and Romania.
The removal of border controls eliminates document checks and long lines at crossings. However, travelers must carry valid ID documents, as border police may conduct random checks for at least six months.
Romania joined the Schengen Area for air and sea travel on March 31, 2024. Authorities and businesses welcomed the December 12 decision. Meanwhile, Germany extended its border checks until March 2025 and may prolong them for up to two years due to migration concerns.
Key Updates:
- The Romanian government closed 39 border crossing points with Hungary and Bulgaria starting January 1, 2025.
- Authorities reassigned border staff based on specific procedures.
