Historic moment for Moldova’s banking sector on Europe Day! Seven banks joined the SEPA

On Europe Day, seven commercial banks from the Republic of Moldova joined the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) payment system. The National Bank of Moldova (NBM) announced the decision.

The European Payments Council approved the bank’s participation in the SEPA system. To prepare, the banks will carry out the necessary technical adjustments. They will begin processing SEPA transfers starting October 6, 2025.

“This decision brings significant benefits to citizens and the national economy, and it’s a great achievement for the NBM team, which quickly integrated Moldova into the European payments area. This creates a secure financial bridge for our citizens, no matter where they are,” said NBM Governor Anca Dragu.

“With this commitment, we connect families, support the diaspora, ease people’s lives, and help Moldovan businesses grow. Transfers will become faster, safer, and cheaper, bringing us closer to the standards of a fair, modern European economy,” she added.

Dorel Noroc, President of the Moldovan Banks Association (ABM), emphasized the goal of fully integrating Moldova’s banking sector into the European payment system to improve consumer services, support business, and accelerate the country’s European integration.

He also noted that the other three licensed banks in Moldova have already prepared their applications for the SEPA connection.

Moldova officially joined the SEPA on March 6, 2025. This milestone supports structural reforms led by the NBM and advances the country’s strategic goal of fully integrating into the EU single market. SEPA enables cross-border euro payments under the same conditions as domestic ones and includes all EU countries.
