Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu has responded to farmers who have threatened to resume protests, saying the authorities will soon adopt a decision in their favor.

“Our response will exceed their expectations. The VAT rate will not be 8%—it will be lower than 8%. Everything will be fine. The first thing we need to do is stop the continuous accumulation of VAT debts over time. They amount to 11 billion lei. In agriculture alone, they total 2 billion lei. If we do not stop this accumulation…” Grosu said.

The government’s response comes after the Farmers’ Force association warned on Thursday, July 2, that the Cabinet has only a few days left to make its position public regarding the proposed increase in the agricultural VAT rate from 8% to 20%.

The association said the deadline it had set for an official response has already expired and warned that, in the absence of a decision, farmers could resume protests.
