Igor Grosu says that the ruling Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) is not endorsing any candidate in the Gagauzia Bashkan election. Speaking at the Realitatea TV studio, the party leader explained that his party does not expect to achieve a strong result in the regional election.

According to Grosu, the party’s low approval ratings are due to unpopular decisions it has taken, including amendments to the Electoral Code requiring candidates for the position of governor of Gagauzia to know Romanian.

“I think there are enough candidates there for our citizens in Gagauzia to choose from. That is what I can tell you. From the list I have looked at, there are people who could be elected and with whom we could work. (…) I think we are not supporting anyone because, yes, that would not be right. You need to have your own candidate. Moreover, there is a provision prohibiting disguised candidates,” Grosu said on the Realitatea te privește program.

Residents of Gagauzia are scheduled to elect their Bashkan and the new composition of the People’s Assembly on November 15. Eight candidates have submitted applications for the position of governor, five of whom have already been registered. The remaining applications are still under review.
