Chisinau Mayor Ion Ceban has sent a message marking the International Day of Older Persons, observed annually on October 1. The mayor thanked older people for their work over the years and their contribution to the development of Chisinau and Moldova.

Ceban also highlighted the importance of the experience and values passed down by older generations.

“I express my gratitude to everyone who has worked throughout their lives and dedicated themselves to the development of our city and the entire country.

You have educated generations, built, healed, created, cared for people and contributed, each through your work, to the Chisinau we have today.

Thank you for the experience you pass on, for the values you preserve and for everything you have given to our city over the years. Part of who we are today is thanks to you,” the mayor said.

At the end of his message, Ceban wished older people good health, peace and respect from those around them and from the state, as well as many happy moments with their loved ones.

The Republic of Moldova marks the International Day of Older Persons every year on October 1.

The number of people aged 60 and over is increasing, and older people now account for more than a quarter of the country’s population, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics.

At the beginning of 2026, around 611,000 people aged 60 and over lived in the Republic of Moldova, representing approximately 26 percent of the population with usual residence in the country.
