Ion Chicu – Candidate portrait

The Party for Development and Consolidation of Moldova (PDCM) chairman, Ion Chicu, has officially entered the presidential race. The politician was born on February 28, 1972, in the village of Pîrjolteni in the Calarași district. He is married and has three children. He speaks Romanian, Russian, English and French.

Between 1989 and 1994, Chicu studied at the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova (ASEM), Faculty of Management. He began his career as a university lecturer at ASEM from 1994 to 1996. In 2005, he moved into the country’s politics as an advisor to Prime Minister Zinaida Greceanii. He also served as Deputy Prime Minister of Finance, member of the Board of Directors of the Council of Europe Development Bank, and later returned to the Government. From April 2008 to September 2009, he was a senior state adviser to Prime Minister Zinaida Greceanii on economic and foreign relations. From December 2018 to June 2019, he served as Minister of Finance and later as presidential adviser to Igor Dodon on public finance. Chicu took office as Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova on November 14, 2019, and resigned on December 23, 2020.

A few months later, Ion Chicu created the Party for the Development and Consolidation of Moldova (PDCM). The PDCM held its founding congress on April 14, 2021, and elected Ion Chicu as the Party’s president.

In the declaration of wealth and personal interests, filed for 2023, Ion Chicu indicates that he raised a salary of just over 42,000 lei from “Cahulpan SA,” the largest bread factory in the country’s south. From PDCM, in 2023, Chicu raised over 35,000 lei in salary. The Chicu family also cumulatively earned over 150,000 lei from two other companies. These are “SC Imunotehnomed” and “SRL Sono Med Expert.” The Chicu family also owns three plots of land, one inherited in 1994. The former premier owns shares in an apartment, a house, and a villa. The 40 square meter dwelling house is an inheritance. The PDCM leader, in his 2023 wealth declaration, indicated that he owns an Audi model car purchased in the same year for 430,000 lei.

The candidate also indicates two donations, one from Ion Iaconi in the amount of 30,000 lei, and another of 100,000 lei from Ruslan Flocea.

The Chicu family has accumulated debts of 840,000 lei after taking out loans from “Moldindconbank SA” and an unnamed individual.
