The former Bashkan of UTA Gagauzia, Irina Vlah, has entered the presidential race with the support of “Platforma Moldova,” a public association founded by Ms. Vlah. She was born on February 26, 1974, in Comrat. She was married and had a daughter, Ana. Irina Vlah speaks Russian and, for the last few years, Romanian.
She studied at the State University of Comrat from 1991 to 1996 and from 2001 to 2008 at the Institute of History, State and Law of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova.
A lawyer by profession, she worked in the Tax Inspectorate of Ceadir-Lunga and was head of the Legal Department of the Gagauz Autonomous Administrative Administrative Unit. From 2005 to 2015, Ms. Vlah was a member of the Moldovan Parliament on the list of the Party of Communists. In 2014, she resigned from the parliamentary faction and remained an unaffiliated MP. In 2010, Irina Vlah ran for the Bashkan of UTA Gagauzia position but came third and did not advance to the second round. She tried again in March 2015 in the same elections and won in the first round with 51.01%. Vlah was re-elected with 91.27% for a second term in 2019. In 2023, the politician announced the launch of the “Moldova Platform” public association. She went to the country’s villages for several months to talk to citizens – an informal preparation for the upcoming presidential elections this fall.

According to the declaration of wealth and personal interests filed with the Central Election Commission (CEC), Vlah has raised more than 510,000 lei salary from the Executive Committee of UTA Gagauzia in 2023. The politician has had an apartment in use since 2020, 113 square meters, which she allegedly received as a donation. The property would cost 657,875 lei. She also acquired a garage worth over 121,000 lei in the same year. The former Bashkan does not indicate cars, villas, and other expensive assets in her declaration. She indicated she would have obtained almost 1,000 lei as interest from a local bank in 2023.
