Is Moldova’s energy crisis hiding around the corner? Contract with Gazprom on stand by?

Gazprom has not yet responded to the letter from Chisinau regarding the “fate” of the gas supply contract after May 1st, according to the statement of the Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development, Andrei Spinu, who states that “Moldova is ready for any scenario.”

The official states that seven European companies are ready to deliver natural gas to the Republic of Moldova. At the same time, according to him, for May we have alternatives for the country’s gas supply and we could buy them through the state company Energocom.

“We have 24 million cubic meters of gas stored in Romania and Moldova. The need is 45 million cubic meters, but the need decreases to about 32 million cubic meters due to reserves. The 24 million cubic meters provide 75% of what is needed for May, given that Termoelectrica is already working on fuel oil. In case of interruption, Energocom will purchase gas from the market “, says the minister.

In April, the purchase price of methane was 1193 US dollars per thousand cubic meters, and on the market it was 1226 dollars, notes bani.md. According to Spinu, it is not planned to increase the tariff for April and May.

“It simply came to our notice then. We have an unprecedented situation when the price of gas in summer is higher than in winter “, he concludes.
