“KIV” remains in the past! Chisinau International Airport changes its abbreviation from January 2024

Chisinau International Airport (AIC) renounces from the abbreviation KIV. This was stated by the Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development, Andrei Spânu.

“From January 18, 2024 the Chisinau International Airport will have the abbreviation RMO (Republic of Moldova). The previous abbreviation KIV – an abbreviation of the Russian name Kishinev will no longer appear on flight tables. Safe travels!” he wrote on social media.

Earlier, Andrei Spânu hinted at the possibility of concessioning Chisinau Airport without specifying a timeline. It’s noteworthy that Chisinau Airport was previously under the concession of AviaInvest, overseen by Ilan Shor. However, following a decision by the Chisinau Court of Appeal on November 23, 2022, the airport returned to state administration.

AviaInvest, in control for 49 years, faced legal challenges as the state contested the concession contract, leading to a lawsuit at the Stockholm Court of Arbitration. Accusing Chisinau authorities of undue pressure, AviaInvest is seeking €855 million in compensation.
