Every year, libraries and schools in Moldova will receive up to 500 thousand volumes of books in English within the framework of the “Books for Moldova” project. The relevant memorandum was signed between the Ministry of Culture, the charitable organizations Hope 4 AO, CR MCB “Armata Salvării,” the Swedish foundation “Stiftelsen Moldavien,” and the National Library of Moldova.
According to the donors, the project aims to improve, support, and facilitate the learning and use of the English language, ensure access to literature for all generations of readers, increase the level of English proficiency in Moldova by providing books to every kindergarten, school, and library across the country.
“After visiting a significant number of school libraries, donors noted the lack of accessible and affordable English-language literature in Moldova,” the Ministry of Education said.
It was decided to collect the books in the UK through the Salvation Army and distribute them free of charge in Moldova at the discretion of the National Library, which will sort, categorize, register, and distribute the books to the beneficiaries.

“Moldova Foundation, together with Hope4, launched an IT education program for schoolchildren in 2022. One of the main challenges faced was limited language skills among students, teachers, and adults in general. “The low level of English language skills was the reason for insufficient learning,” said Robert Blomberg, president of the Swedish foundation Stiftelsen Moldavien, which supports community development projects in Moldova.
Culture Minister Sergiu Prodan thanked the parties involved in the implementation of the project, noting that English is predominant in education, transnational cultural exchange, and, above all, in the scientific and IT fields.
“English is the common denominator of social exchange and communication in general. It will become even more accessible to readers of all ages,” the minister said.
According to the agreement, 40% of the books will target children and teenagers.
