President Maia Sandu, together with representatives of Parliament and the Central Electoral Commission, met on Monday with members of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia to discuss the implementation of the Constitutional Court’s ruling on the autonomy’s powers and the organization of future regional elections.
According to the Presidential Administration, the discussions focused on the need to amend electoral legislation following the Constitutional Court’s decision, which established that the electoral system must be uniform throughout the Republic of Moldova and approved by Parliament through an organic law.
Representatives of the authorities noted that the solution previously discussed by the joint working group—comprising members of the Presidency, Parliament, the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia, and the Central Electoral Commission—is no longer compatible with the new legal framework after it failed to gain approval from the plenary of the People’s Assembly.
In this context, participants discussed organizing elections to the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia under the proportional representation system used in Moldova’s parliamentary elections and local and district council elections.
“Applying uniform and clear rules in the upcoming election will ensure that all candidates enjoy equal opportunities and that residents of the autonomy can exercise their right to vote freely and equally,” the Presidential Administration said in a statement.
Only some of the People’s Assembly members attending the meeting supported the proposal.
To implement the Constitutional Court’s ruling, Parliament is expected to register a draft law amending the Electoral Code.
