Moldovan President Maia Sandu has delivered a message marking Romanian Language Day, celebrated today, August 31. The president stressed that the Romanian language is an essential part of the country’s identity and recalled how previous generations continued to speak it despite restrictions and humiliation.
“Thanks to them, the Romanian language has endured on this land. Today, we can speak it freely, without fear. All the more, we have a duty to take care of it. And, above all, to pass on to our children the love for the Romanian language, just as we received it from those who came before us,” Sandu said.
She added that Moldovans have a responsibility to leave future generations “this precious legacy: a living language, spoken beautifully, in which they can tell their stories, sing their doinas and express their longing.”
“Happy Romanian Language Day!” the president concluded.
Events Mark Romanian Language Day in Chisinau
Romanian Language Day is being celebrated across the Republic of Moldova on August 31. Several events are taking place in Chisinau, including wreath-laying ceremonies and a literary and musical performance dedicated to the Romanian language, people’s roots and the memories that connect them to their homeland, wherever they may live.
Early in the morning, flowers will be laid at the monument to Mihai Eminescu in the square of the Mihai Eminescu National Theatre, as well as at the busts of writers along the Alley of Classics of the Romanian Language in Stefan cel Mare and Sfant Public Garden.
The celebrations are part of a broader program dedicated to preserving and promoting Moldova’s linguistic and cultural heritage.
