President Maia Sandu has published a message on the war in Ukraine and ongoing peace efforts, addressing Russia’s actions and Kyiv’s position in the negotiation process.

In a post on the X platform (formerly Twitter), the head of state said Ukraine is defending itself and acting in good faith in the peace process, while Russia continues attacks on civilians and energy infrastructure.

“Russia invaded Ukraine. Ukraine defends itself and seeks peace, engaging in good faith in a US-brokered peace plan. Russia sabotages peace talks with false claims while bombing civilians, leaving them without power and heat. This is not the behavior of a country that seeks peace,” Maia Sandu wrote.

The message follows Russia’s claim that Ukraine attempted to strike one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s residences in the Novgorod region with drones—an allegation Ukrainian authorities rejected as unfounded and unsupported by evidence.

Earlier, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said there are “reasons for hope” that the war in Ukraine could end in the “coming weeks,” after talks with several European leaders supporting Kyiv. He added, however, that peace is not guaranteed and that Ukraine may have to accept certain compromises.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and former US President Donald Trump reportedly held talks on Sunday lasting about three hours at Mar-a-Lago on steps toward a peace agreement. After the meeting, Trump said a deal is “close,” but noted that “one or two very thorny issues” remain unresolved.
