Maia Sandu’s Message on Ukrainian Independence Day: Hoping for Swift Peace to Return to Ukrainian Homes

President Maia Sandu conveyed a message on the occasion of Ukrainian Independence Day, which is celebrated on August 24th. The head of state praised the courage of the Ukrainian people who are fighting for their right to exist as an independent nation, while also reiterating that the citizens of the Republic of Moldova are eternally grateful for the strength with which Ukraine safeguards peace and security in the region.

“Today Ukraine dignifiedly celebrates Independence Day. Independence is when citizens can determine their own future, when they have the freedom to build their own country as they envision it. The Ukrainians, through their boundless courage and determination, remind us of this truth every day,” mentioned Maia Sandu. The President added that the Republic of Moldova looks toward Ukraine with deep respect, not only as a neighbor but as a symbol of resilience and hope.

“We are eternally grateful for the strength with which Ukraine safeguards peace and security in the region, thus becoming a bastion of freedom for millions of Europeans. On this day, my hope is that peace returns as soon as possible to the homes of Ukrainians, and that Ukraine’s Independence Day will never again be overshadowed by war and suffering. Glory to Ukraine!”

Ukraine celebrates its independence from the USSR on August 24th, 1991. On February 24th, 2022, the country was invaded by Russian military forces, resulting in a bloody war that caused hundreds of thousands of deaths and immense destruction in the neighboring country.
