Main Developments in the Moldova-EU Relationship in 2023

In what is undoubtedly the most pivotal year in nearly three decades of Moldova’s relationship with the European Union (EU), 2023 has seen significant milestones, including the commencement of accession negotiations, substantial increases in grants and loans, and the country’s accession to the European Civil Protection Mechanism.

Key Achievements in Moldova’s Relations with the European Union in 2023:

  1. The European Council initiated accession negotiations with the Republic of Moldova.
  2. Macro-financial assistance for the Republic of Moldova was increased by 145 million euros, nearly doubling the previously announced funds.
  3. Compensation for thermal energy, electricity, and solid fuels reached 895 thousand citizens.
  4. The Republic of Moldova joined the European Civil Protection Mechanism.
  5. Moldova became the first non-EU country granted access to the Connecting Europe Facility.
  6. European markets received 64% of Moldova’s exports in January-September 2023.
  7. Credits totaling approximately 16.5 million euros were granted, funding 109 initiatives for farmers.
  8. 75 million euros were allocated for the modernization of ten district hospitals.
  9. 8 million euros were provided to support entrepreneurs from 2023 to 2026.
  10. 6.4 million euros were redirected for conservation work on cultural heritage.
  11. Grants, capacity development, mentoring, and training were extended to 40 media institutions.
