March 2, 1992 – Moldova becomes a UN member. History – making Events

The Republic of Moldova became a member of the United Nations (UN) in 1992, shortly after the proclamation of independence from the Soviet Union (August 27, 1991). The Security Council resolution recommending Moldova’s admission to the United Nations was unanimously adopted by the General Assembly on March 2. UN membership gave Moldova official international recognition and was an important step in establishing diplomatic relations with other countries, the IPN reports.

By joining the UN, Moldova sought international support to cope with internal and external challenges, in particular the conflict in the Transnistrian region, which escalated in 1992. Thus, on September 4, 1991, a week after the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, President Mircea Snegur sent a letter on behalf of UN Secretary General Peres de Cuellar requesting Moldova’s acceptance as a member of the UN.

The invitation of the Moldovan delegation to the 46th session of the UN General Assembly meant the approval of Moldova’s application, which was to be formalized at the plenary session. The delegation was composed of Moldovan President Mircea Snegur, Foreign Minister Nicolae Tau and his deputy – Ion Botnaru.
