Maternal and reproductive health care that saves lives even in times of crisis

Today, March 10, at the IMSP Perinatal Center of the “Gheorghe Paladi” Municipal Clinical Hospital in the municipality of Chisinau, the inauguration ceremony of the maternity facilities of the municipal hospital took place. The donation of modern equipment was provided by UNFPA – the UN Population Fund, with the financial support of the US Government.

The donation will contribute to the reduction of maternal and infant mortality indicators in the Republic of Moldova and will increase the access of women from the Republic of Moldova and refugees from Ukraine to quality reproductive health services.

The inauguration event was attended by the ambassador of the United States of America, S. Kent D. Logsdon, the resident representative, of UNFPA Moldova, Dr. Nigina Abaszada, the Mayor General of the Municipality of Chisinau, Ion Ceban, and the administration and medical team of the hospital and the maternity hospital.

Next, learn the story of Alina, a refugee from Ukraine, who benefited from the hospital’s services. Alina had to leave Ukraine because of the war. She gave birth prematurely, at 26 weeks in the “Gheorghi Paladi” Municipal Clinical Hospital. Thanks to modern equipment, now the child and Alina are safe.

The maternity ward was equipped with modern equipment worth 319,000 US dollars by UNFPA- the UN Population Fund, with financial support from the US.

Annually, more than 5,600 births take place at the “Gheorghe Paladi” Municipal Clinic hospital. Thanks to the support of UNFPA and the US government, it was equipped with high-performance medical equipment in the field of obstetrics and gynecology, including fully equipped 2 operating rooms and 1 delivery room, operating tables, and delivery tables, operating lamps, equipment of anesthesia, resuscitation tables for intensive care units of the newborn and gynecology wards. At the same time, medical equipment and furniture were provided for the patient rooms.

SCM “Gheorghe Paladi” is one of the 9 beneficiary medical institutions of the endowment program implemented by UNFPA Moldova. The total value of the equipment delivered by UNFPA with US financial support to medical institutions in the country is 3.6 million US dollars.

Thanks to these investments, more than 15 thousand births will be carried out in safer conditions every year, and newborns who are in serious condition will be saved thanks to modern resuscitation and intensive care equipment.

In the last 6 months of the year, UNFPA Moldova, with the support of the US Government, equipped the most strategic secondary and tertiary level hospitals in the northern, central and southern regions of the country with the largest number of refugees from the community, including the Mother Institute and Child, “Gheorghe Paladi” Municipal Hospital, Hospital #3 in Chisinau, Balti Perinatal Center, Cahul Perinatal Center, Ungheni Perinatal Center, EdineÈ› Perinatal Center, Ceadîr-Lunga Perinatal Center and the Oncology Institute.

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, more than 700,000 refugees have transited through the Republic of Moldova and more than 100,000 have remained in the country. As the majority of refugees are women there is a significant increase in demand for maternal and reproductive health services.
