Minister Popescu: Moldova’s Goal to Assist EU in Stabilizing Eastern Europe, the Balkans, the Middle East, and Africa

In an interview with the program “Puncte de Reflecție” on Vocea Basarabiei, Nicu Popescu, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, expressed Moldova’s desire to play a role in “addressing the issues of the continent” and stabilizing situations “not only in Eastern Europe but also in the Balkans, the Middle East, and Africa.” Moldova’s contribution lies in its participation in peacekeeping operations, such as those in Kosovo, Lebanon, and Mali, and the country now seeks to engage in European operations in Bosnia and Niger.

“It is equally important for us to contribute to problem-solving within our integrated continent. As the Republic of Moldova, we want to help our European family become influential and stabilize situations not only in times of crisis, not only in Eastern Europe but also in the Balkans, the Middle East, and Africa,” stated Minister Popescu.

He emphasized that Moldova’s contributions are made through “very modest contributions, involving one or two individuals” representing the country in peacekeeping operations under the European Union or other organizations.

“We have teams that are part of this European family – you know, in Kosovo, Lebanon, and Mali. We aspire to participate in European operations in Bosnia and Niger,” declared the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Popescu further emphasized that “through these actions, many states within the European Union, for which stability in North Africa and the Middle East is crucial, see that the Republic of Moldova behaves like a responsible future member of the European Union that cares not only about its own backyard but also looks at the globe.”

Moreover, he expressed his conviction that when Moldova becomes a member of the EU, it “will have the right of veto and will significantly influence many global processes.”
