The former Deputy Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Mircea Geoana, says there are no military risks to Moldova, and the country’s citizens can freely build a future based on democratic values. Geoana urged people to actively participate in the referendum on European Union (EU) membership on October 20, expressing his certainty that the Republic of Moldova will have “a very successful European path in the coming period.”
“There are no military risks to the Republic of Moldova. The fact that the Republic of Moldova has two neighbors next to it – Ukraine, which is in a protracted war but is resisting and has a chance to succeed in this war, and also Romania, with a special relationship with the EU and NATO, and which I believe represents a climate of security for the Republic of Moldova.
What we do every day in NATO is to ensure peace. Peace is the most important thing. When you see the tragedies in Ukraine, you realize how important peace is. I also want to send a message to the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, no matter what language they speak, that the Republic of Moldova has an important chance to move towards Europe. Peace in the Republic of Moldova is not militarily threatened by the Russian Federation. The Russian Federation does not pose a military threat to peace in the Republic of Moldova. From here on, we can build any political project that the citizens of the Republic of Moldova want.
