The Russian Federation does not have the military resources to pose a direct military threat to the security of the Republic of Moldova, but this does not mean that the Republic of Moldova is not a victim of the total hybrid war unleashed by the Russian Federation against our country. This was stated to Radio Moldova by NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana.
“Even if there is no direct military threat at the moment, other instruments of energy pressure, disinformation, cyber warfare, propaganda battle, incitement to political and social instability are present, and this is what we know. The Republic of Moldova knows them, and we are trying to resist them together. It is clear that requests for anti-missile defense systems, modern radars, and systems like drones are the basic things that any state that wants to protect its airspace should have,” Mircea Geoana said.
When asked how NATO is preparing the Republic of Moldova for a possible nuclear catastrophe in Ukraine, Mircea Geoana said that the alliance condemns the rhetoric or intentions to create such situations to achieve military goals.
“This is irresponsible. This is contrary to international law, and NATO fully supports the efforts of the International Atomic Energy Agency to protect and find formulas in which such statements or intentions cannot be realized. And even these days, the director general of the agency is in Ukraine. We hope that his professional, impartial advice will be heeded in Moscow, and we hope that all these consequences, including the cooling of water and proposals related to the demilitarization of these areas, will be heard by both parties.”
Mircea Geoana also mentioned how NATO helps ensure the air security of the Republic of Moldova. There are specific things that the Republic of Moldova requested in the military support package.
“There are problems, including air defense, problems with drones, and cyber problems, but the Republic of Moldova knew her necessitates. The country began to invest more in defense. And, I repeat, when the national security strategy of the Republic of Moldova is completed, at that moment, probably, the Republic of Moldova will turn to NATO with possible additional requests, depending on this command post, in which the Republic of Moldova decides which partner and with which request to go, they have a role to work together,” said Geoana.
Earlier, the Deputy Secretary General of NATO announced that he plans to visit the Republic of Moldova.
