The Moldovan government has approved new regulations governing the use of unmanned aerial vehicles, with drone flight information to be shared and coordinated with air traffic services, the Ministry of Infrastructure announced.
The new rules bring Moldova’s national legislation closer to European regulations governing drone operations in U-space airspace. The framework establishes the conditions under which drones can operate in designated U-space areas, allowing them to safely share airspace with manned aircraft.
Drone Flights to Be Identified and Coordinated
According to the Ministry of Infrastructure, the new system will allow authorities and relevant services to identify drones, verify the areas in which they are scheduled to operate, authorize flights and provide information about other air traffic in the area.
“In practice, the system will allow the identification of drones, verification of the area in which they are due to fly, authorization of operations and information about air traffic in the area,” the ministry said.
The authorities say these mechanisms are necessary to allow a larger number of drones to operate in the same airspace without compromising the safety of manned aircraft.
New Opportunities for Commercial Drone Services
The regulations are also expected to create better conditions for the development of commercial services based on drone technology.
Potential applications include deliveries, infrastructure inspections and agricultural operations, as Moldova moves toward aligning its aviation framework with European standards.
The introduction of the U-space framework is part of Moldova’s broader effort to harmonize its aviation legislation with EU rules and prepare its airspace for the growing use of unmanned aircraft.
