The European Union has delivered another batch of materials to the Republic of Moldova to help authorities manage pollution on the Dniester River.
The assistance follows an attack on the Novodnistrovsk hydropower plant in Ukraine, which caused large oil spills into the Dniester River in March, according to IPN.
The EU Delegation to Moldova stated that this delivery completes logistical support that began immediately after the environmental incident. The pollution affected one of Moldova’s main drinking water sources and created risks for the ecosystem and the population’s water supply.
Moldovan authorities activated the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism and carried out on-the-ground interventions with the support of several deliveries of equipment and materials to mitigate the impact of the pollution.
The “EU4Moldova Resilience – Safe State, Resilient Communities” project, funded by the European Commission through the Service for Foreign Policy Instruments and implemented by Solidarity Fund Poland, provides this support.
