Mihai Popsoi announced that the Republic of Moldova is preparing a case file to request compensation for damages to energy infrastructure and for pollution of the Dniester River.

The Deputy Prime Minister stated that authorities are currently assessing the damages and documenting the case, which they plan to submit to the Russian Federation.

“It is our responsibility to prepare this case thoroughly and submit it to the Russian side, in the hope that there will be a favorable international context for the payment of compensation,” Popsoi said during the program “Forum” on Vocea Basarabiei.

He acknowledged that Moldova has limited capacity to enforce such payments.

“Our ability to influence a state like the Russian Federation is limited. But it is our duty to take all legal steps to defend our rights,” he emphasized.

The minister also referred to the broader context of bilateral relations, marked by violations of international law, including in connection with the war in Ukraine.

Regarding the scale of damages, authorities have already made preliminary estimates for certain losses, especially in the energy sector, where figures reach millions of lei. Assessments of the environmental impact on the Dniester River are still ongoing.

“The impact on the environment does not disappear immediately. The ecosystem has been severely affected, including fauna and flora, and the effects will be felt in the long term,” Popsoi added.

Authorities say they will finalize and submit the case file, although international developments will largely determine the chances of obtaining compensation.
