Moldova Opens EU Accession Talks on Cluster 6 at Third Intergovernmental Conference

Moldova is taking another step in its European Union accession process on Monday as the country and the EU officially open negotiations on Cluster 6 – External Relations during the third Moldova–European Union Intergovernmental Conference in Brussels.

The conference is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. Moldova time and will be led by Acting Prime Minister Eugeniu Osmochescu, who heads the Moldovan delegation. He will deliver the opening address, while Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov will present Moldova’s negotiating position for the cluster.

Following the conference, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Moldova time, Osmochescu will hold a joint press conference with European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos and Ireland’s Minister of State for European Affairs and Defence, Thomas Byrne.

During his visit to Brussels, the acting prime minister is also scheduled to meet with several senior European officials, including Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, Commissioner for Economy and Productivity Valdis Dombrovskis, Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maroš Šefčovič, and Gert Jan Koopman, Director-General of the Directorate-General for Enlargement and Eastern Neighbourhood (DG ENEST).

Osmochescu will also meet the winners of the EuroQuiz 2026 competition together with Romanian Member of the European Parliament Eugen Tomac.

According to the Moldovan authorities, the opening of negotiations on Cluster 6 confirms the country’s continued progress toward EU membership based on its own merits and with the unanimous support of all EU member states. Moldova previously opened negotiations on Cluster 1 – Fundamentals on June 15, 2026.
