Moldova will open a new diplomatic mission in Kazakhstan

Moldova will establish a new diplomatic mission in Kazakhstan following the government’s approval of a proposal by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE). The embassy, headquartered in Astana, aims to expand Moldova’s diplomatic presence in the region and strengthen ties with Central Asian countries through Kazakhstan.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Mihai Popsoi highlighted Kazakhstan’s significance as a regional power with substantial economic and commercial potential, abundant energy resources, and a large Moldovan community.

“The new diplomatic mission will deepen Moldova’s relations with Central Asia, particularly Kazakhstan. It will enhance political ties, promote citizens’ interests, attract investments, and boost exports. Moreover, we will be able to establish closer connections with the over 20,000 Moldovans living in Kazakhstan,” said Deputy PM Mihai Popsoi.

In 2023, Kazakhstan’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) reached approximately 250 billion U.S. dollars, reflecting a 15 percent increase from the previous year and an economic growth rate of 3.2 percent. The country is a significant market and a key raw materials and energy resources provider. As Kazakhstan diversifies its trade, particularly with the EU and neighboring regions, Moldova can tap into Kazakhstan’s export potential and attract investments from private companies.

The opening of the embassy in Astana is part of Moldova’s broader strategy to expand its consular and diplomatic network, as outlined in the National Development Plan for 2025-2027.
