Moldovan President discussed in Paris the European future, economic development, and strengthening of our country’s security

President Maia Sandu engaged in discussions concerning Moldova’s prospective EU membership, economic collaboration, and measures to bolster national security during her official visit to France. Following talks with President Emmanuel Macron, she emphasized France’s pivotal support, stating, “France and President Macron personally stand as steadfast allies of Moldova.” The two leaders issued press statements and endorsed a joint declaration.

Additionally, President Sandu held meetings with the President of the National Assembly Yael Braun-Pivet, and the friendship group of the French parliament. Commending the positive trajectory of parliamentary cooperation between the nations, President Sandu expressed her satisfaction during these engagements.

Within the scope of the Paris visit, significant agreements were inked. Firstly, an updated cooperation agreement in the defense sector was signed, building upon the foundation laid in 1998. Secondly, a comprehensive roadmap for economic cooperation over the next six years was established, outlining collaborative actions aimed at fostering increased investment and trade. Thirdly, a financing agreement was reached with the French Development Agency (AFD), encompassing €40 million in funding and a €1.2 million grant dedicated to fortifying Moldova’s forestry sector.

President Maia Sandu articulated, “The financial assistance from our French counterparts will facilitate afforestation efforts, procurement of necessary equipment, and alignment of forestry practices with European standards.” This statement followed a productive discussion with AFD Director General RĂ©my Rioux.

Furthermore, discussions were held with Secretary General of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Mathias Cormann, resulting in the initiation of an action plan spanning 2024-2027. The plan encompasses the adoption of legal frameworks, provision of analytical support, and policy assessments across various sectors including business environment, state enterprise management, agriculture, environment, energy, taxation, anti-corruption measures, justice reform, public administration, education, and development assistance management.
