Moldovans Will Have European Health Insurance Cards. When Will They Be Implemented

Moldova will implement a European Health Insurance Card. This card allows patients from a European Union member state to receive emergency or necessary medical care in another EU member state covered by the insurance institution in their home country.

“In 2025, we plan to introduce the first legislative amendments and develop the concept for this card,” announced Ion Dodon, General Director of the National Health Insurance Company (NHIC).

Ion Dodon stated that a European assessment has been conducted to prepare for the card’s implementation in Moldova. If a Moldovan citizen travels to another EU country and suffers an accident, the treatment will be covered by Moldova’s insurance company. He explained that the costs of planned medical procedures, such as childbirth, will also be covered by Moldova’s insurance institution.

The NHIC Director clarified that the card applies to EU citizens visiting Moldova. For example, an Italian, Spanish, or French citizen traveling to Moldova will receive the necessary or emergency medical care, with costs covered by the insurance institution in their home country.
