Moldova’s farmers asked Maia Sandu and Igor Grosu to declare a state of emergency because of the drought

Farmers in southern Moldova have once again called for a state of emergency in agriculture due to the catastrophic effects of the drought.

This time, the farmers appealed directly to President Maia Sandu and Speaker Igor Grosu. In their statement, the farmers emphasized that the Ministry of Agriculture ignored their previous appeals.

“The catastrophic situation in the southern regions of Moldova has paralyzed the commercial activity of micro, small and medium enterprises. The high cost of raw materials, energy resources, high interest rates on loans, and limited access to markets have driven farmers to the brink of bankruptcy,” the statement said.

Alexandru Slusari, a former member of parliament and ex-director of the Power of Farmers Association, warned of the possible bankruptcy of thousands of farmers this year.

Last month, farmers in Moldova had already asked authorities to declare an agricultural emergency to compensate for drought damage and avoid paying bank fines. However, the agriculture ministry says the current regulatory framework already protects farmers.
