Moldova’s Finance Minister Victoria Belous says state-owned holiday facilities and other properties should either be transferred to private management or put up for sale in order to reduce public spending and turn the assets into businesses that generate economic value.
Belous made the statement during the “Cabinetul din umbră” program on Jurnal TV.
According to the minister, many of the holiday facilities date back to the Soviet period, while the state continues to spend money maintaining them without sufficiently developing the properties.
“I believe we should stop investing in them, transfer them to private management so that they can invest and develop them. I do not think it is a priority for the state to preserve these properties because we are not developing them either. We are simply maintaining them and continuing to spend money on them,” Belous said.
The minister said the government could consider putting these properties to better use as part of its next measures. She stressed that the proposal concerns not only holiday facilities but also other state-owned properties that could be sold or transferred to private management.
Belous also referred to certain properties managed by public institutions, including the Ministry of Finance, arguing that some of them do not provide conditions that would justify keeping them under state management.
“If we want to turn holiday facilities into attractions and commercial destinations that generate added value for the economy, I believe these facilities need to find another manager,” Victoria Belous concluded.
