In the fourth quarter of 2023, the number of unemployed in the Republic of Moldova decreased significantly to 1.13 million people. This represents a reduction of 7.1% compared to the same period in 2022, offering hope for an economic improvement in the country, data from the National Bureau of Statistics show, reports Bani.md.
The figures show that the level of the inactive population aged 15+ was 55.3%, with a significantly higher proportion of women (56.8%) than men (43.2%). It also found that 62.1% of the unemployed were from rural areas, while only 37.9% were from cities.
An important aspect is the age groups affected. Most unemployed are young people between 15 and 24, and adults between 55 and 64.

Analyzing the distribution of unemployment by gender, it was observed that among men the most inactive were pensioners (45.4%), followed by those working or wishing to work abroad (15.4%) and pupils/students (15.1%). Among women, the high share of pensioners (52.3%) and housewives (19.6%) was evident, and a significant proportion of those working abroad or wishing to do so (5.9%).
