Romanian President Nicusor Dan commented on recent statements by Moldovan President Maia Sandu regarding the possibility of holding a referendum on the unification of the two states. He made the remarks on Friday, January 23, in Brussels, after attending the European Council meeting, according to Digi24.

Asked about a possible unification between Romania and the Republic of Moldova, Nicusor Dan emphasized Moldova sovereign status and the decisive role of the will of its citizens.

“At this moment, the Republic of Moldova is a sovereign state, and sovereignty is expressed through the majority opinion of its citizens,” the Romanian president said.

He noted that the majority of Moldovan citizens currently support European integration.

“The majority opinion of its citizens is that the objective of this state is integration into the European Union,” Nicusor Dan stated.

At the same time, he underlined Romania consistent support for this European path, referring to the historical and cultural ties between the two countries.

“Romania, united by culture and history, supports the objective chosen by the citizens of the Republic of Moldova,” he added.

Nicusor Dan expressed optimism about Moldova achieving its European objective and stressed that Bucharest would respect any future decision expressed democratically.

“If in the medium or distant future the majority of citizens have a different opinion, we will act accordingly. For now, we respect the sovereignty expressed by the will of the citizens,” he concluded.

Earlier, on January 12, President Maia Sandu said in a British podcast that she would vote in favor of unification if a referendum were held, but later clarified that there is currently no majority support among Moldovan citizens for unification with Romania.
