Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Toiu said that Bucharest takes pride in the reforms Moldova has implemented as part of its European integration process. She made the statement ahead of the Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg.

Toiu also reaffirmed Romania’s support for Ukraine and said that EU measures include sanctions against Russia.

“We celebrate a historic and very important step that opens the negotiation group for the Republic of Moldova. We are extremely proud of their work and of the reforms they have carried out in justice, anti-corruption, public administration, and the development of the free market and business sector.

We will continue along the two directions of our common European strategy: we will increase pressure on Russia so that it returns to the negotiating table for a genuine peace. We will support Ukraine on its European path, and we celebrate the opening of the cluster,” she told the press.

An Intergovernmental Conference is also taking place in Luxembourg, where Moldova presents its position on the first EU accession negotiation cluster. Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu leads the country’s delegation.

Last week, the EU announced the opening of the first negotiation cluster for Moldova and Ukraine. European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said ahead of the meeting that she expects the next clusters to open in July.
