Rudi Monastery – in all its splendor

Moldovan photographer Roman Friptuleac has shared several unique photos on social media, capturing Rudi Monastery and its surroundings. These images are part of the young artist’s book, “The Footprints of Moldova.”

In the northern part of Moldova, just 45 km from the city of Soroca, lies one of the most extraordinary religious monuments in the country – Rudi Monastery.

Dating back to 1777, it remains a mystery to this day, situated on the outskirts of historical Moldova, hundreds of kilometers away from its capital, a church was built in the architectural style characteristic of the era of Stephen the Great! The church dedicated to the “Holy Trinity” is an eloquent example of Moldovan architectural style from the 16th-17th centuries. Here, on the right bank of the Dniester River, in long ravines and gorges, the vegetation that covered Moldova a millennium ago is still preserved. The church has a flattened plan, with walls nearly a meter thick. Rudi Monastery Dimensions: total length – 17.70 m, wall height – 9 m, thickness – 1 m. The entrance to the narthex is from the southern side of the church. The bell tower is supported by a system of semicircular overlapping arches, known as the “Moldovan vault.”
