The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has initiated the procedures for the Republic of Moldova complete withdrawal from the Commonwealth of Independent States. Foreign Minister Mihai Popsoi announced on national public radio that the authorities will denounce the agreements that underpin the creation of the organization.

Moldova will denounce the CIS Founding Agreement and its annex, as well as the CIS Charter. After these steps, the country will no longer be part of the Commonwealth from a legal perspective.

Mihai Popsoi said that once the authorities denounce these three fundamental agreements, the Republic of Moldova will officially leave the CIS. He explained that the process has already started and that the endorsement procedure is under way. After the new parliamentary session begins, the government will submit the denunciation documents to lawmakers for approval. He added that the government expects to finalize its internal procedures by mid February, after which Parliament will take the final decision.

After Russia started the war against Ukraine and Moldova signed its application for European Union membership, the country began the process of withdrawing from the CIS. The government led by Prime Minister Dorin Recean launched a review of the agreements signed within the Commonwealth and moved forward with the denunciation of several of them.
